GOVERNMENT NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
The Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative encourages local farms to become authorized to accept government nutrition assistance programs. Local farmers authorized to accept nutrition assistance programs (such as SNAP or CalFresh, formerly known as “food stamps”) can work with a faith group to provide local produce to all members, including those participating in federal nutrition assistance programs. Many faith groups help hungry neighbors in need through food pantries, community gardens, or other innovative programs include hosting a CSA (Community/Congregation Supported Agriculture) drop-off site or farm stand at their congregation.
The “Farmer’s Guide to Accepting Government Nutrition Programs” fact sheet helps farmers navigate current government nutrition assistance programs and presents an overview of the steps taken to become authorized to accept those programs.
