Many holidays around the world are celebrated with reflection and, of course, food. As Thanksgiving and other holidays approach, we can also reflect on the food we choose to celebrate with. Is the food nutritious? Is it local or in-season? This year, you can bring your Turkey-Day traditions new life by “localizing” your holiday feast:
- Buy in-season – From greens to root veggies, the harvest season provides us with a bounty of fresh produce to choose from. Eating in season means eating produce grown in the same season that you consume them. Purchasing food in-season is not only better for your health, but also for your wallet.
- Purchase directly from a local farm – In the North Bay opportunities to buy local abound. Buying your food from a local farm keeps your local economy strong as your food dollars stay in the region. You can purchase direct from a farm at a farmers’ market, through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription, or from a locally-owned store or farm stand.
Laguna Farm, in Sebastopol, operates a large-scale CSA and demonstrates an on-going commitment to offering affordable access to the best food by serving low-income customers. This year, the farm is making it easy for CSA and non-CSA customers alike to localize their holiday meals with a Thanksgiving-themed produce box and farm store open to the public during the month of November. The $20 boxes can be purchased anytime online and can be picked up at the farm on Tuesday, November 24th (1:00 – 7:00 pm) and Wednesday, November 25th (12:00 – 5:00 pm). Localize your congregation’s communal Thanksgiving by partnering with Laguna Farm or your CSA partner. If you are in Marin County and want suggestions of other farms that may be available to support a special order contact the Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative.
Happy Thanksgiving!
