World Food Day and Week of Action

Interfaith Food is proud to join other organizations around the country in sponsoring the Food Week of Action.

The Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative encourages event organizing for World Food Day and Global Food Week of Action throughout the month of October to support congregations advancing food justice and food security. Food Day was established to inspire people to celebrate real food, call citizens to push for better food system policies, support sustainable and organic agriculture, reduce hunger, and promote healthy diets. It’s not too late to organize an event for World Food Day or Global Food Week of Action! The Collaborative can help your congregation plan, organize, and promote a Food Day or Food Week event.

You can find a list of resources and ideas from the Presbyterian Hunger Program.  We encourage you to participate in the Food Week Solidarity Actions including:

  1. Support family farmers by pushing for transparency around land investments by pension funds, starting with TIAA-CREF.
  2. Raise your voice to push for justice and good stewardship in the next Farm Bill.

In addition to these actions, you can partner with the Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative on many action ideas including:

  • Start a Food Project!
Gather a few of your congregation’s members to plan a CSA (Congregational Supported Agriculture), garden, or food justice project.
  • Become a Locavore!
Host a “100 mile meal” in which every ingredient comes from within a 100-mile radius (or less!) of the meal site.
  • Get in the kitchen!
Organize a healthy cooking demonstration that features local, healthy foods. A cooking demonstration could also serve as a great activity for a CSA drop-site day!
  • Watch and Discuss!
Host a film screening or dinner lecture series on food issues. We can help organize your film screening.
  • Offer a Helping Hand!
Get a group of congregants to join an afternoon of gleaning at a local farm after services.
  • Advocate for Real Food!
Host a forum on a timely food or justice issue like the Trans-Pacific Partnership or the Sonoma County Community Separators ordinance. We can help put together a panel of experts on a particular issue.
