Nice City Guide: Mont Boron

Mont Boron is a hill separating Nice from Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is also the site of majestic villas, one of which is occupied by Elton John. At the top of the hill stands the monumental Mont Alban Fort, and the whole hill is a place for family picnics.
Mont Boron rises to less than 200 m above sea level (191.3 m) and allows you to see Nice from the port side from a completely new perspective. On the other side, there is a view of the whole of Villefranche-sur-Mer and the Cap Ferrat peninsula. It's worth seeing!

To Mont Boron on foot
The trip from Nice is best done by bike, which will take us to the port. You can rent a bike at one of the stations next to the coastline (Boulevard Franck Pilatte), and then walk. On the left we will pass a small city park, and right behind it there is a staircase. Nearby is the landmark Grotte du Lazaret. Human bones and traces of human life have been found in this cave, dating back to about 240,000 years BC. The second attraction here begins right on the wild beach. This is a beautiful coastal trail along the Cap de Nice peninsula.
Going up the stairs, we reach the end of the stairs and go straight with Nice on the left. After a while, we will reach the church (Notre Dame du Perptuel Secours), followed by another uphill climb. This will take us to the very top of the hill.
At the top of Mont Boron you will find first of all a magnificent, dense forest park (Parc du Mont Boron) and the mentioned villas. Elton John lives in one of them, the one closest to the big antenna. Walking through the forest (Nice again on the left), we reach the fort called Mont Alban. Unfortunately, the facility is closed, but it's worth a look because it's well preserved from the outside. If you have a car, you can drive all the way to the fort, which offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
Fort Mont Alban is a military installation, clearly visible from Nice, erected in the 16th century on the hill of Mont Boron. It was built a few years after the citadel in Villefranche-sur-Mer. The fort performed the same functions as the citadel - it was supposed to protect the coastline of Sabaudia. The facility was used during the Second World War.
From Mont Boron hill we can return to Nice or to the village of Villefranche-sur-Mer, where there is another fort, more precisely the citadel (Citadel of Saint-Elme). There are several ways of descent, everything is relatively simple. From the city, you can return to Nice by bus or train.
